The Truth About replacing iPod Batteries
A question we often get asked is "is it actually possible to replace an iPod battery?" the answer is yes. We also hear from customers saying that Apple either claim it is "non replaceable/serviceable" or quote an extremely high amount of dollars to perform the battery change (making it cheaper to purchase a brand new unit). The financial cost of this exercise is huge when you consider that some heavy iPod users only get approx 1 year of battery life. With a price tag of approx $200-$250 per iPod, you're looking at spending about $600-$750 over 3 years.
The same applies to GPS batteries and other so called "non serviceable" electronics. The manufacturers claim they are "non serviceable" simply because they make more money selling you a brand new device for a few hundred dollars.
Lets face it, batteries are a wear and tear item and will need to be replaced sooner or later. Rather than purchasing a whole new iPod simply because of a dead battery, how about purchasing a DIY replacement battery for as low as $25? The financial cost (as well as environmental) makes much more sense to replace an iPod battery instead of the entire unit.
If you are not confident with replacing the battery yourself, we offer installation services for as low as $30.
Battery Quality
An important note to remember when purchasing a new battery is to ensure that the manufacturer meets certain standards (such as ISO certification) and that the product has built in circuitry to prevent overcharging or accidental short circuits. It makes no sense to save $10 on an inferior battery that does not last, or worse still - destroys your $250 iPod. All of our batteries sold at Circuit Central come with 12 month warranty, are ISO 9001 certified and meet safety standards with built in over charge and short circuit protection.
Battery capacities and operating times
The capacity of battery relates to the operating time between each subsequent charge. This means that the higher the rating, the longer the iPod will work before it needs to be recharged. A battery's capacity rating is measured in mAh (milliwatts per hour). Some manufacturers make false claims on their batteries by stating a higher rating capacity as a marketing gimmick. A rule to remember is that the higher the capacity rating, the battery is required to fit more cells and therefore has to be physically larger. While it is possible to increase battery capacity very slightly (5-10%) without making dramatic changes to physical size, be weary if there are significant increases in stated battery capacity rating over the original without adding significant bulk to the physical size.
